Abstract
This commentary discusses the "scaling" of marks, often erroneously called "closed marking" in the authors' centre. Scaling involves adjusting raw marks to a new range (e.g., scaling a 0–20 range to 6–14) to adjust for exam difficulty or cohort variability. The authors highlight a lack of uniformity in how marks are scaled and propose a reliable mathematical formula ($y = (c \cdot x) + min_s$) to ensure consistency across departments and eliminate bias.
